Dance Festival of India, September 20th, Carnegie Hall, New York City

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 14, 2008 -- A historic first, six leading Indian classical dance troupes performing together at a Carnegie Hall concert in New York at 8:00 p.m., September 20, 2008. The concert is part of a ten-day cultural exchange and community outreach program produced by Dance Festival of India 2008 (www.dfi08.org).

The six dance troupes, and their musicians, travel to the event from Kerala, Manipur, New Delhi, and Tamil Nadu in India, and from Malaysia. Each will perform their distinctive specialty dance for twenty to thirty minutes, including Bharatanatyam, Kalaripayattu, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Odissi.

During the ten day visit to the New York area the roster of 75 dancers and musicians, dressed in their authentic costumes, will also appear in informal performances in public venues in all five New York boroughs, including Central Park and Battery Park in Manhattan. These concerts are intended to extend the cultural exchange program, to reach out to a broader spectrum of audience. In addition, the troupes will conduct dance workshops and make media appearances to publicly display and demonstrate the techniques of Indian classical dance, and discuss their involvement with it.

The artists come at the invitation of the lead sponsor, The ARCH, Inc. (www.thearch.us), a nonprofit organization. ARCH is joined in this leadership by other nonprofit organizations, major corporations, city and state agencies that support use of the medium of Indian classical dance and music as a means to strengthen the cultural and goodwill bridge between India and the United States.

As a tribute to celebrate the cultural exchange program, Dance Festival of India 2008 has also commissioned works from New York-based contemporary artist Pratima Naithani (www.pratimanaithani.com). The art exhibition is open September 19-21 at the New York Academy of Art. The mixed media artworks are created on paper, blending India's cultural past with its present. Using traditional techniques, they are transformations that reinterpret the context of past Indian images.
