Lake of the Torches Presents Five Area Charities With a Total of $11,000.
Lac du Flambeau, Wis. (Vocus) October 29, 2008 -- Lake of the Torches Resort Casino presented five local charities $2,200 each to help them enrich the lives of families living in the Northwoods.
Casino representatives distributed the donations to the Lakeland Food Pantry, the Lakeland Sharing Foundation, the Intercultural Leadership Initiative, the Lac du Flambeau Youth Center and the Autism Society of the Northwoods during a check presentation ceremony on Friday, October 17. The donations were the proceeds from the Carry the Torch Classic, a golf scramble that the casino hosted on September 12 at Trout Lake Golf Course in Arbor Vitae.
“We are very delighted to help these five worthy charities that make such a difference in the lives of area residents,” said Russ Sineni, Public Relations/Promotions Coordinator for Lake of the Torches. “Each of these charities, whether helping families make ends meet or giving youth new perspectives, help enrich the lives of people here in the Northwoods.”
The Lakeland Food Pantry plans to use its donation to help purchase some the 400,000 pounds of food it distributes on an annual basis. Ninety-five percent of this is purchased food and this donation will help supplement their financial resources. “This is a very significant donation by a business and we whole-heartedly appreciate the help that Lake of the Torches has provided over the years,” said John Winkelman, who helps run the food pantry with his wife, Pam.
The Autism Society of the Northwoods is an organization that was recently formed to help families who have an autistic child. The society provides support groups for parents that often feature a guest speaker who is knowledgeable on certain aspects of raising autistic children, adaptive aids to help parents manage daily tasks with their children and makes arrangements for children to attend Camp Awesome or the Easter Seals camp.
Also improving the lives of youth in the Northwoods is the Lakeland Sharing Foundation, which distributes Christmas presents to 450 families having a difficult time making ends meet. In addition, the foundation also distributes Christmas dinners to these families and gives backpacks and school supplies to children whose families have a difficult time making ends meet. “Lake of the Torches has been a significant donor for many years. We appreciate all the help they have given to our programs,” said Sheila Clough, president of the Lakeland Sharing Foundation.
The Lac du Flambeau Youth Center will use the donation to sponsor its Choices program that promotes healthy lifestyles among hundreds of youth in the area. “The Lac du Flambeau Youth Center is fortunate to be a benefactor of Lake of the Torches’ community-orientated events,” said center director Tina Handeland.
The Intercultural Leadership Initiative will use this donation to sponsor more interactive programs that promote understanding and friendships between students of different cultural backgrounds in the Lakeland area.
